Spontaneous cyclone Gita hit Tonga had triggered the Tonga Statistics Department to use its survey skills to gather information assessing the damaged throughout two main island that got hit (Tongatapu and Éua).
It was a challenge persuading the Government to let TSD carryout this work; meetings after meetings then later finally after a monthly it was then supported. Establishing a cluster committee with various sectors (Agriculture, Infrastructure etc) to design the questionnaire for this survey. TSD was then able to carry out the survey in April after training of interviewers and supervisors in late May. Target was to cover the whole of the island just like a census.
