As we prepare for the Labour Force Survey (LFS) 2023, it is essential to engage and share comprehensive knowledge through collaboration with other National Statistics Offices and supporting agencies to maximise our capabilities in conducting this year’s LFS.

The Tonga Statistics Department, together with colleagues from the Ministry of Trade Economic and Development (MTED) including counterparts from Fiji and Cook Island attended a workshop on the Labour Force Statistics on 28 August to 1 September, 2023 in Suva. The workshop was facilitated by the International Labour Organization (ILO), in collaboration with SPC Statistics for Development Division (SPC/SDD).

The main objective of the training is to enhance the capacity of Cook Islands, Fiji and Tonga to prepare, conduct, and analyse data from labour force surveys, and contribute to updating information on both countries’ labour markets, based on the latest international standards on statistics of work, employment and labour underutilization adopted at the 19th ICLS, the standards on work relationships (International Classification of Status in Employment, 2018) of the 20th ICLS, and the statistics on informal economy from the upcoming 21st ICLS of October 2023.

We are grateful for the ongoing support given by ILO through Mr. Tite Habiyakare, Christian Viegelahn, Raj Bimlesh, Nikita Padarath and to Toga Raikoti from SPC.
